Alejandro González Iñárritu made his feature film directorial debut with this striking film, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Three distinct plot lines featuring characters of varying socio-economic backgrounds are interconnected through an accident in Mexico City, which comes alive as a vital and brutal part of the film. In these three urban tales, Iñárritu exposes a Mexico rarely seen on film, and uses a sure hand to create a melodramatic tremendismo, a violent exaggeration that gets at the emotional center.
